The Beginning
I have owed this car for over 30 years. When I was 15 years old a friend of mine Marc Flagg drove a 69 Mustang notch back with a 351windser. We had a lot of fun running around in that car. My drivers license was 6 months away so I searched for a car. A neighbor down the street had a red 1969 Mustang fastback and I thought it was very cool. On that Sunday afternoon I was reading the Penny Saver newspaper and came across an ad. 1969 Mach1 w/390 . I didn’t know enough about cars at that point really understand anything about the car except one thing. 390 was a bigger engine than a 351windser. Marc and I went to see the car in Alameda Ca. It was obviously sitting a long time because weeds had grown all around the car. It was painted with house paint and a brush. The roof had stripes painted with the paint in places a ¼ thick. The steering wheel was a small chain wheel. The rear tires stuck way out with giant mud flaps. The car would not start so Marc opened the hood. One hinge was broken so he had to hold the hood open. Out came the jumper cables and the engine at least turned over but no start. The gentleman came out of his garage with some fuel to prime the carburetor. He must have spilled fuel on the manifold. This time the engine fired up but it spit fire out the carb and the manifold caught fire. Marc was still holding the hood while I took several steps back. The gentleman stepped from the car and I looked straight at him and said” I take it”. I did not have a license yet so we were going to have to come back for it. I convinced my Dad to come and drive it home with me. When Dad came it started right up with no fire. He backed the car up and it shook like you wouldn’t believe. The clutch was completely shot and the clutch pedal was just about to fall off. We limped the car down High Street and everything seemed like it was going to be ok until we turned onto the freeway. At 35mph the front end shook uncontrollably. My Dad could barely hold onto that ridiculous little chain steering wheel. We drove all the way from Alameda to Castro Valley in the emergency lane at 25mph. Clearly this car needed everything rebuilt.
